Sunshine Kids Club Camp

Our Purpose at Sunshine Kids Club
Sunshine Kids Club is a provider of before and after school program for school-age children entering kindergarten through eighth grade in Carroll County operating on our own site. We provide full day care on those days when schools are closed due to meetings, professional days and those selected holidays. Knowing that children need and want more to do in the afternoon than watch cartoons or play video games, and realizing that parents need quality, convenient, and affordable after-school care options, are a few good reasons why we created Sunshine Kids Club.

At Sunshine Kids Club, the children play an active part in deciding which clubs, sports, and activities will be offered. Their involvement in helping to choose the curriculum gives them a sense of ownership in our program that is not found elsewhere. We strongly believe that children need to have choices, and we work hard to provide a variety of opportunities for the children to be able to make choices. The welfare and safety of your child is our first concern. We realize that each child is different, and we truly strive to provide a program that provides both flexibility and stability to ensure that your child's needs are met. Your child is important to you.....and to us! That is why we encourage an open relationship between our parents and staff. Only by working together, can we provide your child with a loving, understanding, and safe environment while they are at their home away from home.

Sunshine has proven exceptional care for the children of Carroll County for over 10 years! With our open door policy, we encourage you to visit our location anytime to see how we do it!

Our Goal
Our goal at Sunshine Kids' Club is to provide an exceptional and stable childcare environment for children entering Kindergarten through eighth grade. The physical environment our school age childcare center is comfortable, safe, secure, recreational, educational and fun. The center is free from hazards and has a predictable routine that is appropriate for the age and abilities of all the children enrolled. With the continuity of care provided everyday, children are allowed to explore their environment and choose from a wide variety of fun-oriented activities and educational materials for their use.

Our Objectives
Children should look forward to coming each day, have fun and enjoy the time they spend at the center. Their routine will never be taken so seriously as to restrict spontaneity or playfulness in either the children or the staff. Children should be children first. They should enjoy their childhood by building friendships; explore new interests with other children and with each staff member. They should be allowed to express their feelings. The importance of cooperation, friendship, teamwork, decision making, responsibility, trust and distinguishing between right and wrong through their experiences will be emphasized continuously.

Program Description
The before and after child care setting is a happy, structured, supervised, stable environment. Your child will receive substantial adult interaction and plenty of attention. There is a special focus on developing the full potential of each child, including those who demonstrate gifted or special talents. The program environment is structured to provide realistic challenges for each child based on his or her own unique abilities, interests, and talents. Emphasis is placed on creating an accepting and nurturing attitude towards each child, and instilling a good sense of self-esteem and pride in achievement.

Children as Partners
We believe that children should be treated with respect. We talk to children as we would talk to anyone using words they understand, but not talking "down" to them. We don't believe in constantly ordering them around. We think that they should have some say in things and should be given an explanation of events, procedures, rules, etc., when they ask. Each child's feelings, ideas and opinions are very important to us. The children should participate in goal setting with the staff and parents as much as possible and should have some input into decisions and issues that affect them.

Parents as Partners
In order for our program to succeed, there must be a partnership between you, the parent, your child, and staff at our center. We believe in setting both long and short term goals for the center and our children. Each staff member will work closely with each parent, or set of parents, to develop and establish an individual plan of care for their child. This plan will include goals for their overall development. We ask for and expect your help and cooperation, in setting and reaching these goals, and reinforcing behaviors at home. We expect each parent to be concerned about their child's progress and to enthusiastically support each of their endeavors. We expect each parent's own attitudes, beliefs, philosophies, and values about child rearing in general to be similar to those we describe in this booklet. We hope that we can establish a feeling of mutual respect, trust and understanding between each parent and staff member.

Attitudes towards People, Our Environment and Animals
Children should be knowledgeable about the world, different people, and their cultures. Children should develop a respect for all living things, including people, nature and animals. Children should develop an appreciation and understanding of people's cultural, ethnic, philosophical, and religious diversity. Children should learn to be empathetic towards others, even those who come from very different backgrounds, or who have very different beliefs and values. Children should learn about their environment and should exhibit environmentally conscious habits. Such traits developed should include awareness, concern, empathy, kindness, love, respect, and sensitivity.

Attitude towards Children
Caregivers should love children and enjoy being around them. They should be non-judgmental and supportive of each child's own ethnic, religious and cultural heritage. They should treat all children equal providing each child with the same opportunities and encouragement. They should respect children as unique individuals and should value each child's own ideas and opinions. They should be affectionate, calm, cheerful, empathetic, energetic, kind, loving, patient, and sensitive. They should be attentive to each child's needs and feelings. We expect this not only from ourselves, but also from every staff member, substitute, guest and parent.
